Under the guidance of a hydro-therapist they perform various exercises accompanied with singing, which is aims to improve their posture and coordination, and also play with some toys! All this is organized by the Izy Shapira House, a non-profit that strives to improve the quality of life of children with special needs. Through the experience in the water, babies learn how to move properly. The exercises are customized for each baby's age and abilities. They help to build self confidence in the kids as well. And for their parents, it's a fun way to spend time with their little ones. Martin Cohen is taking the class with his son, Yair. [Martin Cohen, Participant]: "We live in Herzlia and I work in Jerusalem, so I have a long commute to work. There are days in which when I leave the house Yair is still asleep, and when I return home he is asleep again. So it is usually hard for me to see him, and this allows me to have some quality time with him." The class has other benefits as well. [Orit Fisher, Neuro-developmental Hydro-therapist]: (female, Hebrew) "Staying underwater makes one work on breath control, which means expanding the volume of breath. As the volume of breath becomes larger, more oxygen reaches the organs, which contributes for better muscle and heart activity. The heart-lung endurance also improves." We first introduced Oliver to the water when he was 12 weeks old as part of the same structured training programme which enabled his big sister Gracie to earn her 100 meters distance badge when she was 3. From birth babies have a natural reflex to close their epiglottis whilst submerged underwater but unless trained they have normally forgotten this by the time they reach 6 months old. The Homo Aquaticus (Aquatic Ape) theory has now been largely discredited, but it is nice to let your imagination run wild for a bit and imagine that it was our ancestors interaction with water rather than de-forestation in East Africa due to climate change that set man on a different path to the other creatures on our planet.

Baby Shepherd learns to swim 9 to 11 month old baby Shepherd learning to swim. He can't walk or talk yet, but he's doing well in the water.That is kind of the point. If they didn't stop breathing, they would inhale water and that would be a very bad thing. YOU may not dip your baby in the water. I do. I trust they like their lives enough to stop breathing while under the water and to continue again when they surface. My kids have been underwater tens of thousands of times between the 3 of them. They've never even had a scare. First I must say this is amazing!! My son just turn 8 months old and I want him to learn this. Did u teach Shepherd yourself or paid for lessons? Lessons are expensive and would love to try to teach my son myself. None of my boys have ever had a "lesson". I just get them in the water all the time and we have fun together. They kind of figure it out on their own. I support them in the water when they need it and I try to guide them as much as I can. I put them in a position to learn and they do the learning. This video shows what I did with Shepherd and you can look at my channel page to see other things I did with my first born. Hopefully I'll have a new video featuring my third by summer's end. Because my boys love the water. We have a lot of fun together. Because by the time they are 4 they are terrified of the water and dependent on floatation devices. I don't want fame, but if you read through the comments you'll see a lot of people who say they are inspired. That is why I post. My babies suffering?! At what point in any of my videos are my kids suffering? I see a lot of smiling and laughing. You don't have to teach your kids to swim, but keep your ignorant judgments to yourself.
